Harrow County School for Boys

CCF Signals Section - Wartime 18 Set - September 1963

Photograph from Steve Grimes.

This "signals" photo was taken in September 1963 on the School field (as we remember it!). It shows Steve Grimes operating a wartime 18 set.

Steve Grimes writes:  "The picture may be of interest to those who remember having to lug these extremely heavy (and totally useless) radio sets for many miles on Berkhamstead Common, Tunnel Hill, Purbright or other venues on CCF Field Days and exercises.

"While I am on the subject of camps etc, I wonder how many people remember the unofficial CCF anthem, which was often heard sung to the tune of Anchors Away in the back of  a 3 ton truck or late at night in a hut on a weekend camp.

 "It went:

'We are the Harrow men, diehards are we....
Fighting through blood and slaughter,
Fighting for the Colonel's daughter;
We are the Harrow men, diehards are we....
Fighting through blood and slaughter,
Fight you b**, fight you b*, fight, fight , fight.'

"Ah yes, I remember it well....."
