Harrow County School for Boys

Form 2C 1943 – Form-mistress Mrs (Hairy Mary) Simpson

by Roy Goldman

Boys in the class that I remember were: Ray Alexander, David Barlow, Robert Blackburn, Bill Bowley, Jock Burton, Derek Clarke, John Cooley, Michael Cray, Dennis Drake, Ron Eaton, David Fear, Colin Goldbart, Colin Grundy, Alan Hart, Derek (Wally) Hammond, Peter Hurn, Peter Hutcherson, Harry Jones, Malcolm Love, Stan Miller, Ken Newens, Eddie Nutt, Micky Peat, Syd Porter, Tony Priggs, Peter Rice, Dennis Rudd, Micky Shrank, Keith Smith, Brian Southwell, Roy Street, John Tanner, Wally Vandome, John Woodman - plus me! Roy Goldman. Makes 35.

Alan Reid and Emmanuel Lee joined the ‘C’ stream, some time after the first year – perhaps replacing David Barlow and Tony Priggs who I think left H.C.S. well before School Cert.

After 3 years, 4c and 4d merged into 5d which would be a four year Matric stream with a Lower 5th being created that would do a five year Matric.

In 5d I sat next to Terry Golding (always alphabetical seating!) with whom I became friends – in fact staying with him in Harrow for a couple of years after my own parents split up. We also picked up Cyril Kesslau, John Cadman, ? Talantyre, ? Peover, ? Malcolm Rolph etc. etc.

Sadly, Keith Smith died of Rheumatic fever while in the third or fourth form and we now learn from Stan Miller that Peter Rice also passed away, in recent years.

Currently in touch via email are John Cooley (Suffolk), Stan Miller (Oz), Dennis Rudd (Sussex), Wally Vandome (Hants) and of course myself in Oz. I have had a single email this year from Peter Hutcherson who was on his way to South Africa and promised to get in touch on his return.

Robert Blackburn (Oxford) writes to me regularly and he in turn meets periodically with Bill Bowley (Northwood). We know that Roy Street was around in 2001 – as he attended the 90th Birthday celebration at the school.

That’s about it as of Sept. 14th 2003 – any updates, comments or input of any kind, please feel free.

Roy Goldman.
