Harrow County Staff

Mr. Gordon Haswell - English and History 1913-14

by Alex Bateman

Gordon Haswell joined the staff of Harrow County School on August 1st 1913, and taught English and History.  During his time there, he also joined the school Scout Troop.  He left his post in October 1914 to enlist.

Gordon was serving with the 9th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry when he was killed on the Somme. (His younger brother, Lieutenant Frederick Haswell of the East Yorkshire Regiment, also died on service, on April 23rd 1915 aged just 19).

A year or so after their deaths, a memorial tablet was unveiled in St. Thomas' Church, Sunderland.

Gordon Haswell's name is inscribed on the school War Memorial.

The only other member of staff killed during the First World War, Russell Wheeler, also taught these subjects.  He died aged 34 in November 1916.
